WEST PALM BEACH — County elections officials are worried that they won’t meet a state deadline for recounting ballots in one of the narrowest local elections ever.

Challenger William Abramson is ahead of incumbent Circuit Judge Richard Wennet by just 17 votes – 17 out of the more than 90,000 votes cast in their race.

A machine recount – running the ballots through seven massive machines – is inevitable in a race so close, but it cannot begin until after 5 p.m. today. That’s when the state Elections Canvassing Commission convenes and is certain to order it. State law also requires the machine recount be completed by 3 p.m. Sunday.
